Carson Whitmore (b. 1991, Washington, DC) is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice employs discarded and remnant materials to examine infrastructures shaping human relationships with the environment. Through assemblage, she investigates how acts of repair and preservation negotiate forces of entropy. Informed by a background in quilting, Carson extends the tactile and connective logics of textile into sculptural and installation-based forms. Her recent work, Confluence, explores rivers along the Atlantic Seaboard Fall Line, investigating pre-fossil-fuel technologies and their entanglement with systems of extraction, efficiency, and progress. Within her work, Carson incorporates analog systems of measurement, rendering visible the threads connecting self, site, and history. Based in Durham, NC, she earned her MFA from UNC Chapel Hill and has exhibited across the US and regionally in the Southeast at Lump Gallery, Tiger Strikes Asteroid Greenville, UNC’s Ackland Museum of Art, Duke University, Golden Belt Arts, Greensboro Project Space, and ArtSpace NC, where she was a regional emerging artist in 2020.
