Ex Residence takes inspiration from folk etymology that posits the “threshold” as a literal space, just outside of the home, to process material–quite literally, “holding the threshings”. Developed while working as a carpenter, I utilized quilting as a framework to engage with the visible patchwork of repair and maintenance in my home, an old farm house. Using textile, paint, wood and other material scrapped from my carpentry work, this series responds to specific dimensions of my home and it’s many construction oddities: patched over holes, boarded up fireplaces, accumulations of mismatched material. The central piece of this project is a quilt top, made primarily from salvaged sheets and linens, that spans an entire exterior wall of my home. Exhibited at ArtSpace, NC in 2022, these collected works become a meditation on utility, decoration, gendered labor, and the act of doubling through repair.
